Description: 

Robusta rather than Arabica has a stronger, harsher taste, with a grain-like overtone and peanutty aftertaste. Beans contain twice as much caffeine as Arabica (2.-4% instead of Arabica’s 1.5%) Content of caffeine making the taste of Robusta more bitter, as caffeine itself is. Furthermore, it has 60% less lipid (fat) and sugar than Arabica, so the taste is sharp and less casual. Robusta is valued especially in espressos because of deep flavor and good crema.

The flavor is desirable in a blend to give it perceived strength and finish. Carefully processed, washed Robustas can be superior in quality and provide a milder taste than some lower quality Arabicas.

Production:

According to Wikipedia about 30% of the coffee produced in the world is Robusta. It is mostly grown in Vietnam, where French colonists introduced it in the late 19th century. Nowadays Vietnam is the second largest producer in the world after Brazil. The country has greatly increased the production of coffee in recent years,  although Vietnam exports plenty of coffee, they are not known for producing high-grade specialty coffee.
